Cinema Detroit co-owner Paula Guthat will be introducing Christmas classic The Lemon Drop Kid on Turner Classic Movies (TCM), as part of the network’s Fan Favorites program, on Saturday, November 29 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Turner Classic Movies is available on most cable and satellite systems, or you can watch online here if you have a cable subscription.
Fan Favorites is a special segment in which four TCM viewers introduce a film of their choice on air with the channel’s regular host Ben Mankiewicz. The intro was taped via Skype at Cinema Detroit in August 2014.
Although Paula’s programming for Cinema Detroit is mainly contemporary and decidedly indie, she has been a devoted fan of classic movies and TCM for many years, and, in 2011, co-founded the online classic movie community, TCM Party. TCM Party is a real-time classic movie conversation on Twitter, in which participants live-tweet to the films being shown, adding the hashtag #TCMParty to their tweets. Because there are classic movie fans across the country and around the world, the #TCMParty tag is in use twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.
The foundation of #TCMParty is the “scheduled” parties. Either Paula or one of the other regular “co-hosts” research a specific film and tweet information about it - how it was made, details about the filmmakers, cast, etc. - using the Twitter account @TCM_Party.
TCM Party turned three years old on September 3, 2014, and in that time it has evolved into an online community, where people can discuss classic movies in general. Paula has really enjoyed building the community by bringing classic movies and classic movie people together. And the positive experiences she’s had building a film-related community online influenced her and Tim’s decision to try to create one offline, in real life, with Cinema Detroit.
Paula was surprised and honored to be chosen as one of the first group of four to participate in the Fan Favorites program. Her choice, The Lemon Drop Kid, is a charming Christmas comedy classic, probably best-known for the introduction of the perennial musical favorite, “Silver Bells.” It stars Bob Hope as a con man who scams the wrong woman and ends up in debt to a powerful gangster. He’s got to raise $10,000 by Christmas - or else. Hope’s usual way with one-liners and physical comedy and the cast’s great chemistry make for hilarious holiday fun. It’s a great way to kick off the holiday season. Catch it, and Paula’s intro, on Saturday, November 29 at 2:30 p.m. Eastern on TCM.
